The highly anticipated redevelopment of The Maltings in Berwick-upon-Tweed has reached a key milestone, MICA Architects has reported, with the project now submitted for planning approval. Part-funded by the Government-led Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal and Northumberland County Council, this transformational project aims to be the anchor venue in the town’s culture-led regeneration.

The reimagined Maltings will be a high-profile, year-round destination catering to diverse audiences. From daytime activities to late-night entertainment, the project is designed to boost visitor numbers and spending, revitalising Berwick’s cultural scene. As a central hub for cultural events and festivals, The Maltings will collaborate with Create Berwick and the redeveloped Berwick Barracks, supporting artistic and educational initiatives.

Additionally, the project will generate new jobs and training opportunities, ensuring long-term economic benefits for the community.Key Redevelopment Features:– Transformation of the existing Maltings building– A new flexible theatre– Two cinemas within the existing space– A new rehearsal studio and café– Enhanced backstage and support facilities– Increased floor space and operational flexibility– Improved accessibility, visibility, and integration with Berwick’s historic townscape

Designed with sustainability and heritage in mind, the project preserves the 19th-century stone industrial architecture while incorporating local Doddington stone and modern, high-performance materials.

A fabric-first approach ensures energy efficiency through high insulation levels and airtight construction. The goal is a fully electric venue, targeting 90% clean energy use within the next decade and 99% beyond.Architectural highlights include a stepped roofline that respects the town’s historic skyline, warm-toned brick and metal elements enhancing cultural vibrancy, and a new entrance improving visibility and public space potential.Developed in collaboration with theatre consultants Charcoalblue and The Maltings’ operational team, the design ensures an intimate and engaging performer-audience relationship.

The project prioritises accessibility, including a new entrance connecting Bridge Street and the Quayside, and welcoming, light-filled spaces for all visitors. This ambitious project is set to be a catalyst for Berwick’s wider regeneration, driving economic growth, cultural enrichment, and community engagement.
