LDA Design, Royal HaskoningDHV and Centre for Accessible Environments (CAE) have been appointed by Gosport Borough Council to develop detailed plans to regenerate Gosport’s historic waterfront and guide future development opportunities.

The masterplan runs from the Royal Navy Submarine Museum at Haslar and on through the town centre and high street, ending up at Hardway, a suburb to the north.

LDA Design says:

'In total, the investment into the area will be close to £30 million. This includes £18 million in Government Levelling Up funding, £11 million of which is earmarked to restore the now derelict Grade II listed Rum Store to create new marine workspace and a possible rooftop terrace bar and restaurant with views across Portsmouth harbour. This sum is to be matched by the Rum Store’s owners, UK Docks.

'The remainder of the funding will be invested into public realm improvements to make the waterfront more accessible, promoting active travel and healthier lifestyles and creating new links to the town centre. An area steeped in maritime history, the plans will find ways to better celebrate local heritage, encouraging more visitors and increasing footfall for businesses.

'The masterplan will be shaped by public feedback from recent council-led events and over the next few months, ongoing engagement will further develop and test ideas with the community and stakeholders.'

Sophie Thompson, a director from LDA Design, added:

“Gosport is a special place with a long maritime and military history. It is a great privilege to be part of this restoration and a responsibility we don’t take lightly. We’re excited to help bring the town’s heritage to life and to improve the waterfront so that everyone feels a sense of belonging and pride. We can’t wait to find out what local people think, and to shape ideas and take next steps together.”
