Our second summer housing round table at UCL Here East
Our second summer housing research round table looks at 'building better, building beautiful' following the government's insistence that new planning and design should be of the highest quality.
It is being held at UCL's new campus at HereEast and will inform our debate at our larger September forum on city planning which takes place on the Greenwich Peninsula. Approaches to redesigning and regenerating shopping centres and retail parks for residential use will be discussed.
UCL's Yolande Barnes, Professor of Real Estate at the Bartlett Real Estate Institute will be contributing to our roundtable. She has researched and commented on international real estate markets for over 30 years, specialising in residential markets regeneration, land and mixed use neighbourhoods looking across the UK and world cities.
Our second contributor is Steven Butterworth, Senior Director at planning consultancy Lichfields, leads teams in the real estate, retail and mixed-use across London, the South East and West Midlands, securing and implementing planning permissions. He has been an expert witness at many planning and CPO inquiries. He joined Lichfields in 2004, having previously led the London planning team at GL Hearn.
Steve Cole, Head of Corporate Strategy at Clarion Housing Group, will also take part in the round table. He has over a decade of experience in the public, private and voluntary sector and has worked for organisations ranging from The National Housing Federation, Department of Work and Pensions, The Landscape Institute and the Campaign to Protect Rural England. Steve chairs the University of Greenwich's Professional Review Group for Landscape Architecture.
Our fourth contributor is Mark Elton of Cowan Architects. Mark is a certified Passivhaus Architect, and has been a jury member at the International Passivhaus Awards. He has been practising for 24 years with considerable experience of low energy architecture and retrofit on a wide variety of award winning projects. He was a committee member on the RIBA Sustainable Futures Group for 6 years, and he has worked extensively on social housing retrofit projects including the Edward Woods Estate, and Park View Hub which featured in the DCLG study into solid wall insulation.
