Avanti Architects wins award for Sheffield Children's Hospital

Avanti Architects has been celebrating its win for 'Best New Build Project' of the year at the HEEM Healthcare Estates Awards.

This award has been given for a landmark extension and refurbishment at Sheffield Children's Hospital as an exemplar of child-centred design developed through collaboration with the local community, artists and staff. The aim was to create an uplifting and joyful experience for children of all ages.

Avanti is well known for its expertise in the healthcare area, with the build of the new ACAD Central Middlesex Hospital in London, which is the first ambulatory care and diagnostic centre in Europe and has been described as a seminal healthcare building in the UK.

The firm was appointed after an international design competition. The brief rejected the use of traditional design guidance, instead the principles of 'lean thinking' were applied to a total process redesign, using people/process mapping software.

Avanti has also delivered the total re-branding of a redundant 1960's office building in St John's Wood for the prestigious Wellington Hospital. The building has been completely refurbished to provide 7000 square meters of high-quality healthcare accommodation for outpatients, day care diagnostics and day procedures, including a one-stop oncology service, four operating theatres and 50 consulting rooms. Generous, bright and welcoming spaces for patients and visitors to arrive and wait in, were integral to the design.

We will be looking at the future development of our health centres and science research hubs at our Healthy Cities forum on 30th January next year.
