Bexley Co and river frontage regeneration
We were delighted to invite the MD of Bexley Co, Huw Lewis, to Future Cities Forum's 'Intelligent Cities' to discuss the plans for a programme of multi-million pound developments in the London borough.
Bexley Council has kick started its private development company with £120 million prudential borrowing scheme and has handed over land along the river frontage for the development of housing and employment opportunities.
Bexley has the longest river frontage of any London borough and half a billion pounds will be put into regeneration alongside partners over the next 10 to 15 years. Erith town centre and Slade Green will be re-designed with innovative place-making. The regeneration is to support local residents and also business.
Huw says the creativity of the place-making must ensures sustainability and returns. 'Bexley is fortunate to have such a long stretch of river, where building can take place, but as a borough connectivity is still poor compared to other boroughs and it is still too dependent on the car. We will wait to see the benefit Crossrail brings to this area with the new Abbey Wood station'.
